Khayelitsha Anti-Eviction Campaign Press Alert

Khayelitsha Anti-Eviction Campaign Press Alert
Friday May 14th 2004
12 noon

The Masondwana family who was evicted yesterday from E-Section in Khayelitsha has been re-evicted again this morning. This happened after the family returned back to their house last night and private security guards called the sheriffs and police to remove them once again. The family was unlawfully evicted the first time and now they have been unlawfully evicted again. This despite ANC Premier Ebrahim Rasool’s promise that the people of the Western Cape would be having the “best five years of their lives”.

The community is up in arms that the private security guards have been hired from the nearby impoverished community of Ilitha Park, and are planning to meet with residents of Ilitha Park later today to persuade them not to take up jobs as evictors.

The family is suffering badly since they are made up of several adults (one of whom worked night shift last night and is currently sleeping outside on the pavement), a sick grandmother and a one month old baby.

Meanwhile, a charge of pointing a firearm against Mandela Park anti-eviction campaigner Max Ntanyana was withdrawn by the state in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court this morning. Although the state has laid over 77 charges against the Anti-Eviction Campaign, these are frivolous charges which have always been withdrawn or dismissed by the courts.

Anti-Eviction Campaign Marches Again

13 05 2004

On Thursday 13 May, 2004 around 100 members of the Anti-Eviction Campaign (AEC), supported by people from the Anti-Privatisation Forum and the Anti-War Campaign amongst others. They marched on Cape Town to Parliament in order to present a memorandum of grievances and demands to the newly inaugurated Minister of Housing, Lindiwe Sisulu. The march was precipitated by the news that the Senior Public Prosecutor plans to evict 6 000 residents of Khayelitsha from their homes over the next few weeks, a very short period after the electioneering ANC had promised an end to evictions.

The demands of the Anti-Eviction Campaign are:

  • Housing subsidies for all without further delay
  •  An end to all evictions
  • Drop the charges laid against anti-eviction activists
  • Government must reclaim the land in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha, that was sold out to banks
  • An urgent meeting between all the stakeholders in the struggle over evictions must urgently be held

A representative from the housing minister’s office accepted the memorandum on her behalf and promised to get back to the Anti-Eviction Campaign in the near future.
