Groups representing impoverished Cape Town communities have lashed out at President Jacob Zuma’s warning that the government will not tolerate violent service delivery protests, and the accompanying destruction of property.

Representatives of the Joe Slovo task team, the Landless People’s Movement and Abahlali baseMjondolo defended these protests, saying they were the only way to get the government to pay attention. Read the rest of this entry »

Nonagenarian’s funeral interrupted by police carrying out another illegal eviction

23 10 2009

Gugulethu Anti-Eviction Campaign Press Release
23 October 2009

Yesterday morning, only moments before the funeral service of the late Eunice Nothemba Boyseen, a group of police officers arrived at Mrs Boyseen’s house and attempted to illegally evict her daughter Dora Boyseen and the rest of her family.  Luckily, residents were able to prevent this eviction from taking place.

This was not the first time that police attempted to illegally evict the Boyseen family.  The first and second evictions happened last year when AEC member Nothemba Boyseen was 93 years old.  Because of her age, Nothemba was intured during the process. Read the rest of this entry »

Party Politics Vs Living Politics in Kennedy Road

22 10 2009
by S’bu Zikode
University of KwaZulu-Natal Forum Lecture
Thursday 22 October 2009

The Kennedy Road settlement, like all other Abahlali baseMjondolo settlements, has been embarking on a living politic.

This politic is a living politic because it talks about the realities of our democracy – a democracy that serves the interests of a minority while the majority our people continue to live and to die in inhuman conditions.

S’bu Zikode speaks at UKZN

22 10 2009
S’bu Zikode will give the Forum Lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal at 12:20 today.
This will be his first public address since the armed attack on AbM in the Kennedy Road settlement on the night of 26 September, the systematic destruction of the homes of all AbM leaders living in the settlement and the ongoing death threats against AbM activists – which have now spread beyond the Kennedy Road settlement to include activists living elsewhere with a particular emphasis on those who have spoken in the media.

Funeral of Gugulethu’s oldest victim of evictions, Nothemba Boyseen, 93

21 10 2009
Gugulethu AEC Press Release
22 October 2009

At 94 years, one of the oldest known victims of illegal evictions in post-Apartheid South Africa will be laid to rest today in Gugulethu Cemetery.

Eunice Nothemba Boyseen was one of the 150 people illegally evicted last year in Gugulethu alone. She was forcibly taken from her council home by police who came without a court order. Despite being a vulnerable 93 year old lady, the eviction was not even conducted in a dignified way and she was injured during the process.

At the time, she said this of the City of Cape Town: “They have no respect for women that stays in council houses”.

The Makhulu was supported by Gugulethu Anti-Eviction Campaign activists who, after the illegal eviction, helped put her back in her home. She was one of the 146 successful cases of 2008 where evicted Gugulethu residents were assisted to be put back in their homes.

Eunice Nothemba Boyseen passed away last week but her memory will stick with us for years to come. Makhulu will forever remind us of why we continue to fight against all evictions that seek to destroy the lives of South Africa’s poor.

Intimidation and repression continues in Durban

20 10 2009

Tuesday 20 October 2009 – AbM Press Release

This addendum to yesterday’s press release was received late last night via cellphone text message from Reverend Mavuso Mbhekeseni. Please contact the Reverend for further details on the threats to the clergy, the chairperson of the AbM Women’s League and others, at the court yesterday.

The ANC mob was swearing at us in court saying that we are corrupt church leaders who support criminals. They threatened to catch us and kill us in the city. They said that they would describe us to all their people by the clothes we were wearing. They also threatened the chairperson of the AbM women’s league although she was not present at the court. They threatened her by name, shouted and swore at her name, and said that she is a “a thief who wears pants bought with the money from Kennedy Road people.” The ANC mob was armed with sticks and other sharp objects. They were highly intimidating and it was clear that their threats were serious – they meant what they were saying.
- Reverend Mavuso Mbhekeseni: 072 279 2634

We also need to note that some of the ANC mob threatened AbM people with knobkerries, that they also claimed to have bush knives in the bus and threatened to kill people leaving the court and that threatening sexual gestures were made against elderly AbM women. One of the mob also openly said that their plan, when they attacked the AbM Youth Camp at Kennedy Road, had been to kill S’bu Zikode. Read the rest of this entry »

Controlling Permit Letters Issued to Traders in Mitchells Plain

20 10 2009

Traders and Hawkers in Mitchells Plain Town Centre were given letters notifying them that by 1 November 2009 all structures and boxes should be removed. Traders were informed to collect their permits starting today, 20 October 2009, and on the 21st and 23rd for their new trading bays. This permit, although, will give the city the authority to evict any trader at any time. The permit system is a means to govern the traders. The traders of Mitchells Plain feel outraged by these conditions.

CHATA continues to fight for the rights of the traders and opposes the current permit system process as it adds to our continued marginalization.

CHATA’s deputy chairperson was also elected to be the Trustee for the Western Cape Traders Coalition, supported by StreetNet International.
