Launch of the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign a success

19 11 2009

Hi friends,

The eviction blockade was a big success, thanks to everyone who turned out. But the struggle is far from over for Lenise and the rest of the families facing eviction this holiday season. Though CHA had indicated on Tuesday that they would ask management to work out a payment plan, now they are denying this and we may have to set the blockade back up at a moment’s notice.

How you can help:

  • Call the Chicago Housing Authority at (312) 742-8500 (press 1 then 0 to get an operator and ask for Lewis Jordan) and saying “I support Lenise Forrest, stop her from being evicted from 933 N. Cambridge by making management set up a payment plan now!” Read the rest of this entry »

Plato beefs up security detail [and denies getting klapped]

19 11 2009

By Quinton Mtyala

A day after being smacked by an angry resident during a surprise visit to troubled Blikkiesdorp, Mayor Dan Plato was again meeting residents in an impoverished corner of Cape Town, but this time with a beefed-up security detail.

Instead of jeers, his visit to areas in Philippi was greeted with indifference.

And despite this reporter witnessing the physical assault on him on Wednesday, Plato denied on Thursday he was ever “klapped” and said instead it was one of his bodyguards who had been smacked by a woman.

To a complaint from community leaders at a Brown’s Farm hall that water had been switched off to some residents in the developed area of Brown’s Farm, Plato said: “The city council does not switch off water, once people get their pink slips their water is put on a trickle system.”

Residents threaten to torch Blikkiesdorp

19 11 2009

Malungelo Booi | 19 November 2009 | Eyewitness News

Angry Blikkiesdorp residents threatened to torch their temporary corrugated iron homes on Wednesday during a visit by the Mayor.

The residents said that they were tired of city officials failing to deliver decent homes, despite their repeated promises to do so.

Community members physically shoved Alderman Dan Plato as he walked around the settlement, and labeled him a liar. They also said he should not return until their housing needs were met.

Plato denied making promises and told residents that Blikkiesdorp had more to offer than other informal settlements.

Grave Concerns about the Detention without Trial of the Kennedy Thirteen

19 11 2009

This Travesty Must End

by Bishop Rubin Phillip
18 November 2009

After their 6th inconclusive bail hearing today, it is now abundantly clear that the legal process for the Kennedy 13 is a complete travesty of justice. They are scheduled to appear again on the 27th November. By that time, some of accused will have been in prison for 2 months without trial – two months in prison without any evidence being presented to a court and without a decision on bail. This is a moral and legal outrage that amounts to detention without trial by means of delay. In our view, it borders on unlawful detention. I am, tonight, issuing a call for their immediate release – justice has been delayed far beyond the point at which it was clear that it had been denied. Read the rest of this entry »

AbM: All Charges Dropped Against the Pemary 13, But Someone Needs to Answer for Police Attacks

Abahlali basePemary Ridge Press Statement

Abahlali basePemary Ridge is happy that all charges were dropped against 13 of our members, who were arrested in a brutal attack last Friday by the Sydenham police.

Abahlali has said, since 2005, “My lawyer is my neighbour.”  In court today, the Pemary 13 were not represented by a lawyer, but by the Chairperson of Abahlali baseMotala Heights , Shamita Naidoo, who learned about justice through years of experience working in her community, and about the law seeing case after political case brought by police against shack-dwellers.  Shamita spoke powerfully and with a lot of anger against the police violence so common in Abahlali communities, and in all shack settlements.  Read the rest of this entry »
