Ocean View residents are frustrated!

28 04 2010

AEC Solidarity Press Release
Venue: Meeting at Ocean View Multi Purpose Centre
Date/Time: Wednesday night — 28 April 2010 —-7:30pm

The Ocean View flats are totally overcrowded, as is the Atlantic Heights informal settlement. People are frustrated at having been promised housing for years but nothing has ever been delivered.

The people are sick and tired of what the flats committee is doing. People need to put bungalows in the yards because 12-15 people stay in one bedroom here but the Flats Committee then calls the law enforcement to break down the bungalows.

People are frustrated about the promised housing project in nearby Mountain View. Mayor Dan Plato promised last November to start building it within three months. But nothing at all has happened since then. They said they would consider hundreds of backyard dwellers who live in Ocean View.

Silvertown Anti-Eviction Campaign will also be attending the meeting.

Mitchells Plain Traders: CHATA Arrests and Responses

28 04 2010

On Saturday, 24 April 2010, one of CHATA’s members was arrested from the Town Centre market and her goods were confiscated. The city of Cape Town did not issue a confiscation or eviction notice prior to the arrest. Additionally she was trading on land owned by a private owner giving the city no legal ground for the confiscation of her goods. There needs to be more pressure put on the City of Cape Town and the government of South Africa for the mass actions being taken throughout the country against informal traders. Goods are being stolen every day and the government is defending this act by claiming they have the right to confiscate what they do not feel is being sold in the right manner. Legal action needs to take place against these acts.

Additionally, CHATA is responding to a newsletter that has been circulated by The Mitchells Plain Town Centre Merchants Association, discrediting CHATA in its fight for the poor. The chairperson for the MPTCMA is Dr. MC Roomaney, telephone number: 021 392 8130.

CHATA, in particular, is responding to targeted attacks and claims in the newsletter. The MPTCMA stated that “…we exposed these people for the selfish, greedy and obstructionist opportunists they are” in the workshop with the mayor help on 18 November 2009.

Really, it is a shame

15 04 2010
by Lindela Figlan of Abahlali baseMjondolo
An abridged version was published in the Daily News on 15 April 2010

South Africans are facing tough times.  It is a time when there is no humanity, a time when no one in government is interested to listen to your story if you are a poor person.  There are good thinkers in this country, but if their ideologies are coming from the bottom up, from poor communities, no one is prepared to listen carefully.

Kampf gegen Räumungen im post-Apartheid Südafrika: Der Fall von Mandela Park, Khayelitsha

15 04 2010

Martin Legassick, South African Labour Bulletin, 27, 6, December 2003. (trans. Werner Gilits)
