[Abahlali] Metro Police Have Left Motala Heights – one shack destroyed

The Metro Police have left Motala Heights.

Between four to six Metro Police officers came from behind the library and attacked the home of Mr. Buthelezi. They came without warning and caught the community by surprise and were able to smash his home. However by the time they
started on the second home the community had rallied, under the leadership of James Pillay (Halala Qawe!), there was a commotion and the second home was saved. The Metro police were led by a man called Siven. They refused to say who
had ordered them to attack the community.

Media: Nehawu wants details on student loans (aec comment)

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma must use his State of the Nation address next month to give more details about his plan to give students full loans.

On Saturday at the ANC’s 99th birthday party in Polokwane Zuma said the government would not make final-year students pay back their third-year loans if they passed. These loans would be converted into full bursaries.

Yesterday one Cosatu affiliate union said Zuma needed to give more details about this plan in his State of the Nation address and in Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s budget speech. Read the rest of this entry »

Solidarity: Urgent Call for Journalists to Rush to Kennedy Road as Tensions Rise Again

Update: 18:28 Officer Mqadi intimidated the (elected) KRDC and said that they are opposing the (unelected) ANC leadership in the settlement and that he will arrest them if the cleaning work is stopped pending a meeting with the Municipality. He made it quite clear that he is not neutral. He brought Zandile Mdletshe to address the mass meeting in the hall where she was vigorously opposed. At that meeting it was agreed that the KRDC would meet with the ANC and that both parties will report back to a mass meeting on Wednesday. Three state witnesses in the Kennedy 12 trial openly opposed the ANC leadership in today’s mass meeting in the hall. A number of state witnesses have already refused to testify against the accused and one has testified, as a court witness, that she was asked to give false evidence against the accused.
