Media: Granny (81) living in fear

9 02 2011

Jan 28, 2011 | By Michael Nkalane | Sowetan

AN 81-year-old Cape Town woman says she lives in fear of her own daughter, who allegedly stole her ID book to open accounts at stores

A visibly scared Nompoto Mbeki of Gugulethu said her daughter Miseka Mgwayi, 42, “has been abusing me for the past 19 years” – since Mbeki divorced her husband in 1992.

After the divorce, Mgwayi immediately had a set of keys to Mbeki’s house cut for herself.  Shortly afterwards Mgwayi started shouting at her mother all the time, allegedly telling her that she (Mgwayi) was the new owner of the house.  And now, Mbeki says, her daughter has opened an account at a furniture store in her name after allegedly stealing her ID book. Gugulethu Backyarders Press Release
29 September 2010

The Gugulethu community experienced four major evictions yesterday and, according to the presiding Sheriff of the Court, there are many more evictions to come.

As of yesterday evening, three out of the four evictions have been reversed by community members with the support of anti-eviction activists. But the events are a wake up call to us – we need to unite and be on alert if we are going to be able to prevent further evictions in our neighbourhoods. Read the rest of this entry »

Telling the world that neither this City nor the World Cup works for us!

25 03 2010
25 March 2010
Anti-Eviction Campaign Press Release

The poor in South Africa have mandated their leaders from social movements like the Anti-Eviction Campaign, Abahlali baseMjondolo, the Landless People’s Movement, Sikhula Sonke, the Anti-Privatisation Forum, etc, to speak about issues that are relevant to poor people. The poor have not mandated us to support political parties and their elite agendas.

The poor who make up our rank and file members of our movements want us to tell the world that in South Africa the poor are treated like terrorists and criminals. Our members are intimidated, harassed, arrested, and tortured every single day. And we are tired of being treated as second-class citizens.

As part of our effort to tell the world about our struggle, two Anti-Eviction Campaign members will be embarking on a trip to Germany, Scotland and Switzerland at the invitation of activists from those countries. Read the rest of this entry »

Radio: Local Gugulethu Residents Wants the Jobs at New Mall in Their Area

1 12 2009

Monday, 30 November 2009 21:58

The Gugulethu Anti-Eviction Campaign will again be protesting against the management of the new Gugulethu Square Mall. Two weeks ago, the community handed over a memorandum to the manager of the Gugulethu Mall, with a promise by the manager to respond after she’d read it. The community who had not received any response to date, now says they are now no longer demanding that 80% of the jobs at the mall be given to residents of Gugulethu, but that all of the jobs are given to the local Gugulethu residents.

The further demands from the community includes the removal of the councilors and development forum from the job allocation process and that the police must refrain from using violence against them when protesting peacefully.

Gugulethu Anti-Eviction Campaing Press Alert
05 November 2009

Gugulethu Anti-Eviction Campaign will be protesting at the new Gugulethu Square Mall tomorrow morning at 08h00am.

Residents are angry that most of the jobs at the mall are going to people who do not reside in Gugulethu.  Despite Mzoli’s assurances, very few of the jobs are going to locals.  Since the mall is being build on land that should rightfully be owned by the Gugulethu community, it is only fair that residents benefit from development happening on their land.
