Protest Day 1: A call for Madikizela, MEC for Human Settlement to resign

12 04 2011

PROTEST DAY ONE

Last week Abahlali baseMjondolo Western Cape made a call to MEC for human settlement M.R Bonginkosi Madikizela to sign an undertaking that he will never, ever again within the Western Cape Province demolish or evict people without any order from the court.

This follows number of illegal activities and intimidation carried by his office lead by him. ABM WC gave him seven working days to respond, and as an organization we were only expecting him to sign an undertaking that says he will not demolish people’s structures without following legal rout and a failure to sign such undertaking it simply shows that he is arrogant and thinks that he is above the law. 9 03 2011
Backyarders Press Release
8 March 2011

At about 4.30am on Saturday morning 4 thieves were arrested by city police while pulling 3 wily bins full of groceries, cooking pots and office equipment including 2 computers and a printer.

They had broken into 2 offices in our Andile Nhose Community Hall. One was the Backyarder’s office and the other was an affiliate soup kitchen project for the elderly. They also went to break into children’s classrooms at our community creche where food and children’s belongings were stolen.

A theft and breaking and entering case was opened at Harare police station against the thieves.

We remind you that this is the same police station where a recent attempt murder case was opened against DA member and later changed into common assault due to interference by MEC for housing (Bonginkosi Madikizela). Read the rest of this entry »

A self-written history of Mandela Park: Kwanele Enough Is Genoeg

15 02 2011

Kwanele Enough Is Genoeg # 10: Mandela Park (Makhaya) 14-02-2011

Written by the Mandela Park Backyarders Movement

The following is a self-written history by our movement.  After a lot of deliberation with our members, we came up with this document as a way of explaining how we have come to say Kwanele!  Please use this document in order to better understand our struggle…

Some History

It is now 17 years since the first democratic government came into power, with a constitution that promises many freedoms in its declarations: What have been at the forefront of most people dreams when the new ANC government came into power was the famous quote “There shall be houses, security & comfort”. It is now years since we first voted and there is little change to show for that, besides five year voting ritual.

The story in Mandela Park (Makhaya) started in the late 1990’s, when the government’s new neo-liberal policies enabled companies to retrench workers in the name of rightsizing and many government departments out-sourced their responsibilities to private companies. They literally handed over the future of millions of workers to the hands of greedy employers and labour brokers. They also built up a strong layer of a Black capitalist class through Black Economic Empowerment. Read the rest of this entry »

Police and MEC Madikizela in Mandela Park destroying brick houses

4 02 2011

4 February 2011
Mandela Park Press Statement

According to reports from Backyarder members in Mandela Park, MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela was in Mandela Park earlier today with police and Anti-Land Invasions workers with the intention of destroying a number of brick houses built by poor community members.

As we speak, authorities are demolishing both brick houses and shacks.  We think by the end of the day, we think 8 homes will have been destroyed

Community members used a huge amount of their savings to build these houses and the MEC is now threatening to put them back in shacks in other people’s backyarders.

Why is the MEC for Housing destroying our houses?

People are traumatised. Read the rest of this entry »

Persecution from authorities against Backyarders dies down as illegal occupiers flood Mandela Park houses

9 12 2010
Mandela Park Backyarders Press Release
8 December 2010

The Mandela Park Backyarders have finally experienced silence from Authorities after heavily armed police with soldiers moved in 6 families from Gugulethu and 45 other people from Town Two into unfinished houses in Mandela Park. The MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela cannot account for other 45 families from Town Two and he is now pointing fingers at Ward 97 Councillor Rider Mkhutswana as much better positioned person to answer.  But how can something orchestrated so diligently allow for unknowns from Town Two to participate in the occupation?
The move was precipitated by DA members who were sent by the MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela to moonlight in our movement.  They stole our roll call containing the names of our members.  Now the police have vowed to harass and arrest every member of the Mandela Park Backyarders who are on the attendance list.

It appears that a political motivated agenda to drag police into persecuting our movement is done to safeguard criminal elements within the authorities of this country who are being supported by SANCO and the political parties when they give their members free houses.

In South Africa, negotiations are important when seeking common understanding between the people and their government.  But Mandela Park Backyarders have found negotiations to be a waist of time because they are rarely done in good faith.

Our plan is to embark on the same strategies used in other communities.  We will not subject ourselves to useless round tables anymore.  We will meet the government on the street and have all discussions on the same street until a decision that will favour our street agenda is met.

High camaraderie to abahlali bakoQQ Section

Tuesday night the informal settlement of QQ section was covered with fire which left about 80 families without homes and their personal belongings.  Alarm bells were already rung by this community during heavy service delivery protests against those in charge.  But government’s ferocious attitude towards poor meant that their demands were swept under the rug.

In the aftermath of the fire, the government provided residents with food and a few sheets of cheap zink – this is a tired and has been a short-sighted approach.  They want to manage disasters, not prevent them.  To us, it is a “PRANK”.  You can’t replace a broken chair with another chair thats breaking!  It’s illogical and double insult to the poor and marginalised.

We forward our solidarity to Abahlali baseMjondolo and the QQ Community at large. As Backyarders we would like to say to you one day the HIGH’S WILL BE LOWS AND THE LOWS WILL BE HIGH’S.

Media: Mandela Park house chaos

29 11 2010
Monday November 29th 2010 – WestCapeNews

Beneficiaries of a Khayelitsha housing project have spoken out about alleged fraudulent sales and illegal occupations of their houses. The Mandela Park Housing Project 823 has been constructed in phases over the past eight years and is nearing its completion, but has been wracked by sporadic protests – often violent – by Mandela Park backyarders over the fact that beneficiaries are from Gugulethu informal settlements.West Cape News established this week that backyarders have illegally occupied about ten state-subsidised houses in the housing project since the beginning of the month, moving in as soon as, and sometimes before, the contractor completed them.
