The Gugulethu Anti-Eviction Campaign will hold a mass picket of hundreds of people at the Gugulethu Police Station in Section Four. We are expecting the Mayor and the MEC for Housing in Western Cape, Richard Dyantyi, to come to the picket and collect the memorandum. The AEC is angered that the City has suddenly intensified its evictions of elderly people in Gugulethu, from council houses. Those people have been living in those houses for 20 years or more and there is no reason to evict them. The amount of rent they have paid over the years more than covers the cost of the actual houses. The Anti-Eviction Campaign will continue to return those pensioners to their houses every time they are evicted.

Mass meeting against evictions in Gugulethu this weekend at Gugulethu Sports Complex
Last weekend on 10th February 2008, the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign and the communities of Gugulethu, New and Old Crossroads, Khayelitsha “in and around”, Nyanga, Langa, Mandela Park, Station Park, Hazeldene, Mandalay, Luyoloville, Tambo Village and Settlers (Langa), invited all Ward Councillors to our weekly meeting.
They never showed respect to the community by coming and responding to the community. Therefore this week we have called on the Mayor to attend our meeting.
There are many eviction problems in Gugulethu. Last week on Tuesday police came to five houses in Gugulethu, escorted by someone claiming to be the Sheriff. Those police took peoples furniture out of the houses and evicted the whole family from each of those houses. Three of those houses are council houses and two are bond houses. The man who claimed to be a Sheriff, he did not produce any eviction order from the court. Most people who were at those houses were women.
Those women were complaining that they were not expecting to be treated in that manner because those houses are council houses. The way in which the police behaved, they manhandled most of these woman. Most of the women are complaining about Captain van der Ross, the Gugs station superintendent. The community of Gugulethu and other areas are not happy about that. And now we ask the Mayor of Cape Town to respond to these problems of eviction in Gugulethu as well as other areas.
The media are invited to attend.

On the 24th of May we will be holding an open exhibition called “faces of Delft” at ShelfLife gallery in cape town to raise awareness of the current housing crisis. The exhibition is focusing on the Delft forced removals but covers problems such as police brutality, corruption and other factors of the housing crisis and forced removals that happen all over the western cape and beyond. Professor Martin Legassick of UCT will be speaking and any evictees and others who feel they have something to say are welcome to speak they’re mind. With media coverage from the Argus and the Capetowner, we hope to raise the profile of the problems and get the general public involved. Transport can be arranged for those far away.
