What do communities do if politician after politician fails to deliver their election promises of new homes, electricity supply or clean water. On Saturday I joined activists in Cape Town who are articulating a new response to the crisis of service delivery in the city.

It is early on Saturday morning in Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s fastest growing townships located on the windswept and sandy Cape Flats area of Cape Town. Amongst the government constructed houses and informal settlements that make up the township the Cape Town of five star hotels and Michelin starred restaurants seems even further away than the 10 mile journey to get to this vibrant part of the city. Our communities are very busy organising our No Vote! events just in time for this year’s elections. We refuse to vote, not because we are lazy or apathetic as the media tends to claim. Instead, we refuse to vote because our vote is to precious to give to corrupt politicians and political parties. Here are a list of the events with links and contacts:

The Mandela Park Backyarders intent to remind you that we will be holding an Anti-Vote Election Summit at 09h00 on Saturday the 14^th of May. In attendance will be people from as close as across the street and supporters from as far as Johannesburg.

Backyarders hold Anti-Vote Summit in Mandela Park in challenge to politicians courting their vote

The Mandela Park backyarders would like to invite you to an Anti-Vote Election Summit that will take place at Andile Nhose on the 14 May 2011 from 09:00am until 12:30pm.

The summit objective is to expose the housing crisis in Mandela Park that is leading to a serious attack and violation of people’s dignity.
