Joint Committee of Phase 2 in Blikkiesdorp
Press Release – 7 May 2010

Three families have been living homeless, freezing weather, rain and all, at the gates of Blikkiesdorp for over 10 nights now.

These families were evicted recently from backyards where they used to live in Delft. They came to Blikkiesdorp looking for a tin because they have nowhere else to go. Since the City of Cape Town will not accommodate them inside Blikkiesdorp, they have occupied some land at the entrance to the Phase 2 section of the TRA. Read the rest of this entry »

The City of Cape Town ignores Blikkiesdorp

25 03 2010
25 March 2010
Blikkiesdorp Press Release

The community of Blikkiesdorp Phase 2 have been trying since last October to have their grievances about the appalling living conditions in the TRA addressed. Some of the issues that the community have wanted addressed by the City of Cape Town are the following:

1.      There are only three toilets each for K, L, M, N, O and Q blocks. This means that there is an average of 3 toilets for 112 structures. As if this is not bad enough, not all of these toilets are even in working order. When this was raised with Mr. Trevor Dennis Mitchell of the City of Cape Town, the community was informed that the City would not be able to help, as fixing the toilets would be a health hazard for his workers. Seemingly, he nor the City of Cape Town seem to care that these toilets are a health hazard for the residents! Read the rest of this entry »

Media: MP traders up in arms

11 03 2010

2010-03-11 05:52:02 – VOCFM

Mitchells Plain traders are up in arms following the removal of their stalls by law enforcement officials on Monday. According to Mischka Cassiem from the Concerned Hawkers and Traders Association (CHATA), this was because of a new by law which came into effect last year, which had declared Symphony Lane in Mitchells Plain a no trading zone. Cassiem said that approximately 1000 informal traders and hawkers have been left with no income and their goods have been confiscated by the law enforcement officers. The appeal trial of the community of Zille Raine Heights v. the City of Cape Town case commenced at 10h00 and was concluded at 15h15. It was heard by a bench of three judges, including one woman who is a gender activist. The court was packed to the brim with community members. Outside throughout the day the children sang songs, danced and held placards and the banner of the settlement on the stairs of the High Court. We had good publicity, including interviews from E TV, the Cape Argus, the Cape Times, and Radio 786, who interviewed Gwendoline Botha and Layla Ryklief amongst others. The community also received strong support from organizations including the Anti-Eviction Campaign, UCT, UWC and Plaas. ’Every night I take tablets’ to live in Blikkiesdorp

2 11 2009

Malungelo Booi | 2 November 2009 | Eyewitness News

Some of Blikkiesdorp’s newest residents believe they may spend the rest of their lives in the temporary relocation area.

Monday marks a week since the City of Cape Town moved 23 families from their pavement shacks in Delft to nearby Blikkiesdorp after securing a court order.

The families had erected shacks on the pavement in Symphony Way after they were evicted from government houses they had invaded in late 2007.

Matilda Groepe said she was trying to make the best of a bad situation.

She admits life is not easy in Blikkiesdorp.

“Every night I have to take tablets because I am just not happy.”

Another resident, Jerome Daniels, has challenged officials to spend a night in their corrugated structures.

“I want Helen Zille and Dan Plato just to stay here and feel how life is like in Blikkiesdorp.”

The residents believe with Cape Town’s housing backlog being what it is, they will probably spend the rest of their lives in Blikkiesdorp.
