We, the pavement dwellers of Symphony Way, have just completed our forced removed from the road into the relocation camp of Blikkiesdorp. However, during the past week, a lot of misinformation has been thrown around about our community by the City and in the media.
Firstly, we would like to make absolutely clear that there was not a single family from Symphony Way who actually wanted to move to Blikkiesdorp. It was reported in the Argus a few days ago that people were excited about their new places and the move was festive. This is of course not true. There is a reason that over 100 families actively refused to move to Blikkies for over 20 months. It was also reported that there were divisions in the community about the move. This is also untrue. We were merely having an extended conversation of our options: (a) pay exhorbitant fees at backyards, (b) go to crime infested Blikkies, (c) occupy unused land, occupy empty bond houses, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

HAVING been defiant for months, 23 of 127 families have relented and yesterday moved from pavement shelters in Symphony Way, Delft, to a notorious temporary resettlement area dubbed Blikkiesdorp.

WITH hopes of finding an alternative to Blikkiesdorp dashed, members of the Symphony Way Anti-Eviction Campaign will today meet with the City of Cape Town about the terms of the relocation of people living illegally on the pavement in Delft.

MEDIATION efforts between the City of Cape Town and the pavement dwellers in Symphony Way in Delft have begun, with little progress being made.
The Cape High Court ruled the residents would have to move from the pavement to the temporary relocation area of Blikkiesdorp, but left the two parties to negotiate timeframes, dates, and how many would be moved at a time. Read the rest of this entry »

Cape Town – A Western Cape High Court judge on Monday granted an order for the eviction of 103 families who have been living in shacks on the pavement of Symphony Way, Delft, for the past 21 months.
The order allows authorities to shift the families in batches to corrugated iron structures in a nearby temporary relocation area nicknamed Blikkiesdorp. Read the rest of this entry »
